There’s nothing more annoying than having to deal with earaches. Depending on the cause of the earache, symptoms may include highly sensitive ears. Even the slightest sound could cause pain. It is even more difficult to deal with when your child has it. A lot of parents understand how difficult it is to know why your child is being fussy and irritable. If it turns out that an earache is the cause, then you are in luck for there are home remedies that could help relieve the pain quickly.

Before that, why do people have earaches anyway? Earaches can be caused by a wide variety of things, the most common cause include the build-up of wax, ear infections, water in the ear, and sinus infections. Depending on the cause of the earache some of the home remedies that are about to be mentioned might not be suitable. So be sure to pick the best one.

Pop your Eustachian Tubes.

Pop your what? So, the Eustachian tube is a narrow tube that connects the middle ear, the upper throat, and the back of the nasal cavity. This tube helps equalize pressure on each side of the eardrum. So if something was to prevent them from equalizing pressure on each side of the eardrum, like when they are blocked, the person affected would experience pain. To remedy this, you have to “pop” or unclog your eustachian tubes. You can do this by wiggling your ears. Other methods of popping the ears include chewing gum and yawning.

Use warm or cold compresses over the ears.

Get a heating pad or a damp washcloth. Place it on a surface that wouldn’t get damaged by it like your tiled kitchen countertop. Lay your head on it so that your ear would press down on it. The warm or cold compress would help reduce swelling. They would also help alleviate the pain.

Be mindful of the cause of the earache. If the cause of the earache is an infection, you might want to avoid a warm or cold compress that introduces more moisture into the ear. Also, if the earache is caused by sinus infections, you might want to avoid cold compresses.

Apply Lavender Oil in and around the Ears.

Studies have shown that lavender oil has bactericidal effects against a wide range of bacterial species. If the cause of the earache is bacterial infections, then using lavender oil would be highly beneficial as they can help deal with the underlying cause. Aside from dealing with the bacteria that are infecting your ear, lavender would also help soothe the nerves in and around your ear which helps alleviate the pain.

You can massage lavender oil on your outer ear but remember to dilute the lavender essential oil in a carrier oil first. To dilute lavender oil, add 12 drops of this oil to 30 milliliters of olive oil. To place lavender in your inner ear, you can either use a cotton swab or cotton bud, soak it with the oil and gently rub it inside the ear, or you can simply place one drop of the oil in your ear. However, if your eardrums are damaged, do not put anything inside your ears.

Apply Olive Oil in and around the Ears.

If you don’t have lavender oil, then you could use olive oil instead. Use this oil the same way you would with the lavender oil. As mentioned earlier, olive oil can be used as a carrier oil for your lavender oil. If you can manage to get a hold of the two, then mixing them together would do wonders for your ear pain.

For a more soothing effect, warm up the oil near body temperature. Remember to test the temperature on the back of your hands before applying it to your ears.

Put Hydrogen Peroxide inside your Ears.

We don’t usually advocate the use of chemicals but if you don’t have any other choice, you can use 3% or 6% hydrogen peroxide. Lay down with the affected ear facing the ceiling. Place several drops of this chemical in the affected ear, and allow it to sit in the ear for about 5 minutes. The fizzing and bubbling up may be uncomfortable, so you will have to bear with it. Sit up and drain the ear. Use some tissue paper to remove the hydrogen peroxide that drains out. Lay down again and put distilled water in your ear to rinse off any remaining hydrogen peroxide. By doing this entire process, you help remove any bacteria that may be causing the ear infection and pain.

Rub Vick’s vapour rubs on your outer Ears.

Vick’s vapour rubs have that cooling menthol effect that is perfect for soothing pain. They are also great for decongesting which is great if you have sinusitis.

Depending on the cause of the earaches, it would usually clear up in about a week or less. If symptoms don’t clear up after a week, you should consult your doctor, especially if it is accompanied with fever.
